Joe January, a drinker and vividor guide hired by Paul Bonnard to find his father and a legendary lost treasure. Both enter the most sterile and inaccessible regions of the North African desert accompanied by Dita, a prostitute eager to undertake a new life that will play a crucial role in the struggle of both men for survival.

Philips falls in love with Leni, but she is already committed to the man who helped them in their escape from the Third Reich.
